About Us

old photo of 33 Broad Street as Archer's PainterHere is an old view of the shop as G. Archer, painters (from photo in Thomas & Lewis, Blaenafon Through the Years in Photographs Volume 2). If anyone has older photos of the shop we would be delighted to see them.

Browning Books opened on 28th June 2003, World Heritage Day, as one of the founding members of what was Blaenavon Book Town. For the proprietors this was a move onwards from the specialist children's book shop which Stephanie started in Abergavenny on returning from decades living overseas.

The range of books in the shop has been influenced by our having lived, and brought up children, in the Netherlands, Brasil, Belgium and Japan. Our view on life and culture is rather broad.

Stephanie is a Blaenavon girl by origin and Andrew, whose mother came from the town, has always been fascinated by the local area and its industrial history.

Why the name "Browning Books"? It fits well with Broad Street and Blaenavon, and it was Stephanie's great grandfather, Lewis Browning, who wrote the first history of the town.
